DNA links B.C. man to Calgary sex cases
According to yesterday's Calgary Herald newspaper, the National DNA Database has linked a Kelowna, B.C., sexual assault suspect with a series of unsolved flashing incidents in southwest Calgary. Calgary police have laid charges against the suspect in connection with a number of indecent exposure cases from the first half of this year.
City detectives were alerted after Kelowna RCMP charged a 42-year-old man last month with an attack on a B.C. woman.
The man was already in Kelowna RCMP custody for allegedly lurking at night when he became a suspect in the Aug. 1 attack in British Columbia.
The same man is suspected in more than 40 incidents of indecent exposure in Calgary.
The Calgary charges are in connection with unsolved flashing incidents that plagued the communities of Altadore, Bankview, South Calgary and Connaught, starting in January and suddenly ending in mid-July.
The bold flasher eluded police, who had stepped up patrols last summer in the hope of catching him in the act.
Det. Gary Creasser of the Calgary Police Service said linking the crimes to the same suspect through DNA evidence was a collaborative effort.
"If not for the RCMP crime lab and national DNA databank, we may never have caught a suspect," Creasser said Wednesday.
Calgary police attributed 43 incidents of lurking and indecent exposure in the southwest neighbourhoods to the same perpetrator.
The man was often masked and knocked on victims' windows to get their attention.
He lingered in front of them until they picked up the telephone to call for help.
"This was a source of great concern for us," said Creasser. "Even being seen, he wouldn't leave the area. He would remain there for up to a minute, hoping he would be seen."
Last month, Kelowna police charged a man with sexual assault after a 20-year-old Kelowna woman was sexually touched while she was sleeping in a tent in the backyard of her home on Aug. 1.
Calgary police have charged Clinton Jeffrey Nunn, 42, of Salmon Arm, B.C., with two counts of trespass by night and indecent exposure, and one count of criminal harassment.
